The Indonesian Police have pledged to safeguard and protect Australian tourists and all Australian facilities in Bali and throughout the rest of Indonesia.

The Chief of the Indonesian Police, General Sutarman, speaking from National Police Headquarters in Jakarta on Friday, November 22, 2013, made the pledge of protection for Australians visiting Bali, saying his guarantee was “absolute.”

General Sutarman told beritadewata.com that the was no connection between the increased political tensions linked to revelations of electronic surveillance by Australia against Indonesia’s leadership and the safety and security of visiting Australians to Bali. Adding: “Tourists must have their security guaranteed. The safety of embassies and the consulate generals are also guaranteed. And that security is the responsibility of the Indonesian Police.”

Addressing fears that certain groups in Indonesian society might take steps outside the law against Australian interests in Indonesia, Indonesia’s top policeman called for calm and submission to the law.

Promising that the police will prevent any anarchical actions, Sutarman said he would not hesitate to seek assistance from the Indonesian Armed Forces, if that was required.

Australia remains the top source of visitors to Bali. As tensions increased between Jakarta and Canberra following the revelations of espionage by Australia against the Indonesian President and his cabinet, the Australian government issued a formal travel caution to Australians in Indonesia
