Garuda Indonesia’s new subsidiary operation of Garuda Explore launched is first flight using ATR 72-600 aircraft from Bali to Labuan Bajo/Komodo (Flores) and Bima (Sumbawa) on Monday, December 2, 2013.
The French-Italian turbo-prop aircraft were selected by Garuda to serve domestic routes in remote areas of Indonesia and the shorter runway lengths found in these locations.
The inaugural flight was joined by Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy Mari Elka Pangestu, the Deputy-Minister for Transportation Bambang Susantono, the French Ambassador to Indonesia Corrine Breuze, the CEO of ATR Philipo Bagnato, and members of the press.
The CEO of Garuda Indonesia, Emirsyah Satar, told those joining the inaugural flight that the ATR aircraft was chosen by Garuda for areas served by runways of less than 1,600 meters in length.
Quoted by Beritabali.com, Emirsyah said: “The ATR 72-600 represents an aviation milestone for Garuda offering flights to new destinations for both tourism and investment. We want Garuda Indonesia to fly everywhere in Indonesia. The ATR 72-600 is a dependable aircraft using the latest technology.”
Minister Pangestu said she hope the use of ATR aircraft will help grow tourism numbers and develop exotic tourism across Indonesia.
Said Pangestu: “Garuda Explore will make manifest connections from Bali to Eastern Indonesia; the development of tourism from Bali to beyond. These flights will bring tourists to tourism destinations like Labuan Bajo, Bima, Ende and Wakatobia."
The Minister of Tourism also hopes that flights with Garuda Explore will introduce remote areas of Indonesia to more Indonesian travelers.
