Tens of university students and activists protested peacefully outside the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali on Monday, December 2, 2013.

The students from the National Student Front (FMN) were demanding that the international World Trade Organization (WTO) underway in Nusa Dua, Bali be cancelled.

According to Beritabali.com, the protest began with a long march from the Nitimandala Square in Renon that ended outside the consulate building on Jalan Hayum Wuruk. Carrying banners, flags and posters the students rejected the WTO meeting being held in Bali. As they approached the consulate the protestors were met by hundreds of riot police.

The protestors screamed for the abolishment of the WTO and for united opposition to U.S. free trade initiatives. “We reject the WTO. The meeting of the WTO is part of a imperialistic political scheme to create hardship for the people of the world,” said the spokesman for the FMH, Reven Larung.

According to Larung, the WTO is at the forefront of the liberalization of world trade that causes suffering to poor people. He depicts the WTO as a coordinated scheme intended to exploit nature, cause suffering on the workers, farmed and other marginalized peoples.

For these reasons, he called on the public to battle against the WTO that is, in his opinion, raising havoc on education, labor and nationalist movements.

Larung accused the U.S. of seeking to dominate the world economy and colonize countries like Indonesia.
