The regent of Bangli, Made Gianyar, has defiantly announced that the continuing status of the Batur Volcano as a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark Network (GGN) must be seen as a ‘do or die” proposition for his regency.
As reported by Bisnis Bali, the Regent has called on all components of the community to safeguard the UNESCO Geopark designation for the caldera and surrounding areas to ensure that the status is renewed during an audit performed once every four years.
In comments made by Gianyar on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, the continuing Geopark status for Batur deserves the support of all parties. Citing the long and hard fought battle to secure Geopark status from UNESCO, Gianyar said it would be tragic if Geopark status is lost in a future review.
The Regent warns that UNESCO will be looking to ensure that Batur is developing as a destination capable of sustainability and protecting itself from environmental degradation. He continued his warning, pointing to excavation of the area (Galian C) that is changing the face of the Park.
