(1/5/2014)

Garuda Indonesia has opened a new route from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to Tambaloka Airport in West Suma, Nusa Tenggara Timor.

The subsidiary Garuda Explore fleet using ATR 72-600 aircraft will fly the new routes.

The new service was inaugurated on Friday, January 3, 2013.

Erik Meijer, the head of sales and marketing for Garuda, told Metrobali.com, that Garuda’s new routes support the government’s Master Plan for the Acceleration and Expansion of the Development of the Indonesian Economy (MP3EI) by enhancing connectivity between islands.

He said he hopes Garuda’s expanding network of services to remote regions will enhance business and tourism traffic across Indonesia.

The “Explore” sub-brand of Garuda Indonesia was launched on November 25, 2013. Explore is using ATR 72-600 and Bombardier CRJ 1000 NG aircraft deemed suitable for traffic conditions and limited airport facilities in some regions of Indonesia.

Meijer said future routes from Garuda Explore bases in Denpasar, Makassar and Ambon are planned to:

  • Labuan Bajo (Flores), Tambaloka (Sumba) and Ende (Flores) in East Nusa Tenggara
  • Bima (Sumbawa) in West Nusa Tenggara
  • Banyuwangi and Jember in East Jaw
  • Bau-bau and Wangi-wangi (Southeast Sulawesi)
  • Luwuk and Poso (Central Sulawesi)
  • Mamuju (West Sulawesi Barat)
  • Kaimana (Papua)
  • Tual/Langgur (Maluku).
Meijer also confirmed that Garuda Indonesia would bring 35 ATR 72-600 aircraft, with 25 aircraft on “firm order” and the remaining 10 on purchase options. Two of the new aircraft arrived in November 2013, with the remaining aircraft arriving in phases through 2017.

Denpasar-Tambaloka

The new Garuda Explore service from Denpasar (Bali) to Tambaloka (West Sumba) will operate on a daily basis.

GA-4020 will depart Denpasar at 6:15 am landing in Labuan Bajo (Flores) at 7:50 am. The flight leaves Labuan Bajo at 8:20 am before landing in Tambaloka at 9:00 am.

The return service GA 4021 leaves Tambaloka at 9:20 am landing in Labuan Bajo at 9:50 am. The flight leaves Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo at 10:20 am and lands back in Denpasar at 11:45 am.
