As many as 8.000 bottles of illegal wine and spirits were shattered and thrown away at Bali's main rubbish dump at Suwung in Denpasar on Friday, March 7, 2014, witnessed by police and state prosecutors.
The 7,000 bottles of imported spirits and 1,000 bottle of imported wine were seized by officials in late 2012 in a case involving a local businessman Teguh Darmadi of CV Bali Dewata Wine.
Officials estimated the potential loss in tax and excise from the confiscated drinks exceeded Rp. 1.5 billion (US$125,000).
In the same case, Teguh Darmanto of CV. Bali Dewata Wine was sentenced to one-year in prison for storing and keeping spirits and wines with falsified customs and duties stamps.
The confiscated alcoholic beverages were crushed with heavy equipment before being buldozed into the rubbish tip.
