Detik.com reports that Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation is calling on the Minister for State Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Dahlan Iskan to urgently rescue Merpati Nusantara Airlines, in order to prevent the air carrier’s permanent closure.
“Those who can sort this out are not us (Ministry of Transportation), but Merpati itself. We are only the regulators. The BUMN Minister must also bring pressure on Merpati to sort out its affairs,” explained the director general of Civil Aviation Herry Bakti on Thursday, March 13, 2103 in Jakarta.
Herry Bakti added that Merpati is now facing the threat of losing its operating licenses. According to government rules, any airlines that fail to fly for 21 consecutive days can have its Air Operating Certificate (AOC) cncelled.
Meanwhile, Merpati has reported to the Ministry of Transportation appealing for 30 days or more before its AOC is yanked.
“There are two types of permits involved: the business operating permit and the AOC. The AOC of Merpati has been frozen for a year, if the shutdown continues we will withdraw it. If there are no flights for a year the business license will also be withdrawn,” said Bakti.
The Ministry is asking Merpati Nusantara for a new business plan, a request that has not yet been met by the Airline.
Bakti said that Merpati has asked for more time to create a business-restructuring plan, warning the deadlines for the airline to recommence operations are not negotiable.
