The director of PT Garuda Maintenance Facilities Areo Asia (GMF), Richard Budhihadianto told the press on Thursday, June 19, 2014 that Indonesia is losing out in the aircraft maintenance industry sector due to the high import duties charged on the importation of spare parts and components for aircraft.
GMF is a subsidiary of the national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia.
As reported by Bisnis.com, Richard called on the Government to eliminate customs duties on aircraft components so its airline industry as a whole and the aircraft maintenance sector can compete with Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
He also mentioned the time-consuming procedures and bureaucracy surrounding the importation of aircraft spare parts into Indonesia.
Budhihadianto’s comments echo a similar call from the Indonesian National Air Carriers Association (INACA) who want to see import duties for aircraft spare parts eliminated in Indonesia in order to keep Indonesia’s fast growing aircraft industry competitive.
INACA says such a step by the government would help the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul industry for aircraft grow in Indonesia.
