The State News Agency Antara reports that the Director General of Civil Aviation has undertaken an unannounced check on the health of pilots and the airworthiness of aircraft at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport just as the peak Ramadan travel period is about to start.
On Wednesday, July 23, 2014, the Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang Susantono, said, “We are read and the inspections will take place not only in Denpasar but in other locations across Indonesia to ensure that that planes and pilots are fit to fly.”
According to Susantono, ramp check being carried out by aviation officials took place from July 22-25, 2014. Across the nation, a total of 11 airports were undergoing similar checks.
Nine domestic airlines were under review during the ramp checks: Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Citilink, Indonesia Air Asia, Sriwijaya Air, Nam Air, Wing Airs and Transavia.
Also subjected to inspection were the flight crew with 40 pilots and co-pilots asked to provide urine samples guarantee that flight crews were not abusing prescription or illicit drugs.
