On Tuesday, July 22, 2014, the National Election Commission (KPU) declared Joko Widido and Jusuf Kalla as the Winners of the national election to select the 7th president and vice president of the Republic of Indonesia.
The official vote tally showed Widodo-Kalla with 53.15% of the final vote, while their opponents, former general Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa, with 46.85% of the vote.
In terms of total votes, some 8,421,389 votes separated the two sets of candidates.
Claiming massive voter fraud, Prabowo Subianto declared he would not accept the final count of the KPU and marched out before the final tally could be formally announced,
The Prabowo ticket, in keeping with deadlines set forth in the election rules, filed a lawsuit with the Constitutional Court on Friday evening, July, 25, 2104, that must now decide if Prabowo’s appeal has merit and, if so, render a final decision on the validity of the polls before the end of August.
Despite intimations of street protests and the the formal declaration by KPU naming Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla as Indonesia’s next President and Vice President, the election took place with no physical protests or promised mass demonstrations taking place at the KPU headquarter.
Meanwhile, the KPU have announced that they are pleased with the way the election was transacted and have declared that their legal team will meet any legal challenge mounted by Prabowo Subianto and Hatta Rajasa challenging the final results that have declared Joko Widodo Indonesia’s next president.
