Bali Lawmaker Calls on Authorities to Keep Track of Newcomers Expect in Post-Lebaran Period

(8/4/2014) has published a call from the vice-chairman of Commission I of the Bali House of Representatives (DPRD-Bali), Gusti Putu Widjera, for the relevant government agencies to closely supervise the massive flood of returning people to Bali after the Ramadan holidays.

Putu Widjera has asked that people traveling to Bali from other islands carry with them identity papers and, if planning to migrate to Bali, a letter verifying employment in Bali.

“I hope the government, beginning from the provincial level to the village of banjar level, selectively keep records on new arrivals entering the island in the post-lebaran period,” said the legislators on Thursdays day, July 31, 2014.

Gusti Putu Widjera confirmed that Bali offers a range of employment opportunities connected with the Island’s tourism industry. Such opportunities lure migrant workers to Bali who must, by law, carry complete identity information to safeguard public order.

“Everyone is entitled to come to Bali as long as they have a work capacity or expertise in keeping current job openings. But if newcomers are only coming to Bali to try their luck at finding a job here, it is better if they reconsider their desire to come to Bali,” said Widjera.

He continued, saying he hoped newcomers wishing to work in Bali would follow local administrative rules. Adding: “I hope the administrations on the village and banjar level will record data on new arrivals, ensuring complete information is on file.”

Widjera called on people in Bali who own rental houses or boarding houses will record the details of renters and submit this data to local authorities.

“Public order and peace will be achieved if all residents follow the administrative rules in place that require everyone who enters Bali or takes up residence on the Island and reports to local community chiefs,” he said.
