Ketut Pujayasa, the 28-year-old former Holland America Cruise Line MV Nieuw Amsterdam steward charged with rape and attempted murder in connection with a brutal attack on a female passenger during a “nude cruise” in the Gulf of Mexico, remains behind bars in a Boward County, South Florida jail awaiting trial.
The Balinese man has pleaded “not guilty” to the charges laid against him, claiming he was only defending his family’s honor against the woman who called him a son-of-a-bitch” through a closed door when he tried to deliver a morning breakfast tray.
Putuyasa is facing a potential 22-28 years in prison in response to the multiple criminal charge of rape and attempted murder in connection with the February 25, 2014 attack.
On Thursday, July 31, 2014, family members, friends and neighbors of Pujayasa in Bali organized a traditional prayer service at the Pura Dalem Purwa at the traditional village Suwung in Buleleng, North Bali.
Members of his family carried photos on the man taken in better times when he had just graduated from a cruise shipping academy.
In their prayers family members sought divine help in order that Pujayasa can be released from the threat of 26 years in prison.
Pujayasa is being assisted by a court-appointed defense attorney assisted by the Indonesian Consulate in Houston, Texas.
