A story that could only be told in Bali opened on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, in the small village of Jehem near Bangli when a group of four young Balinese boys aged 7, 10, 13 and 16 were playing near a neighbor’s pigpen.

In circumstances that will perhaps remain forever unclear, the older boys, using dare and the promise of a free kite, persuaded the youngest member of the group, a 7-year-old boy, to simulate sexual intercourse with a 142-kilogram sow while one of the older boys recorded the encounter on a hand phone to later share with the social network.

In the days that followed the video came to the attention of the young boy’s parents and the police who rounded up the children who readily confessed the detail of their perverse game.

Villagers - genuinely concerned that the sordid incident had unbalanced the cosmos and portended great misfortune ahead for both the boys and their village – resolved to cleanse the perpetrators via a “Pemrayascita, Rsi Gana, Ian Pecaruan” ceremony held on Friday, August 8, 2014.

In the course of the ceremony, the pig was sacrificed and floated out to sea near Tulikup, Gianyar.

Meanwhile the four boys, accompanied by their parent were brought to the same beach where caged pig was floated out into the ocean. On the seashore and witnessed by villagers and their families, the fours boys were stripped naked, ceremoniously bathed and saw their clothing tossed into the sea – symbolizing a ritualized death and allowing the boys to return to their normal role in the village.

During the course of the ceremony prayers were offered seeking deliverance from any retribution and good fortune for the boys and Bali in the future.

The cost of various ceremonies and offerings was borne by the boys’ families and the village. The village also paid compensation to the pig's owner.
