Swiss Cows Stampede Bali

Colorful Cows from Switzerland Coming to a Balinese Location Near You.

(6/22/2003)

Swiss Cows The Swiss Cows in Bali Round Up and Auction

From July 24th through August 7th a herd of nearly 40 life-sized Swiss cows will be positioned in hotel lobbies, shopping centers, restaurants and other public locations across Bali awaiting their final disposition via a massive "cattle auction" scheduled for Saturday, August 9, 2003 at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park.

Have things gotten so bad that Bali has decided to turn itself into a giant livestock yard? Hardly.

The life-sized cows, made of hardened molded polyester, are currently being tended in art studios and community halls across the island where energetic and creative Balinese artists are transforming the Swiss cows into priceless pieces of art. Local arts communities have been commissioned to paint the cows together with well known Balinese artists such as Wayan Sika, Made Wianta, Made Budhiana, Kadek Kaek, Mahendra Mangku, Sunadi, Wayan Karja, Made Djirna, Wayan Darmika, Pande Supada, Dana, Gusti Ayu Murniasih, and Made Aswino Aji.

The Swiss Cows in Bali Project is the inspiration of two long-time residence of Bali, Peter and Ruby Studer who, together with their project team, have assembled a group of talented young Balinese artists originating from villages with distinctly local painting styles, art communities, and art schools.

As a result of their efforts, what will be undoubtedly the world's most colorful herd of Swiss cows will be on display at locations across the island for the 2 weeks leading up to the final auction on August 9th.

The Swiss cows, manufactured in an original all-white, become the canvasses on which will be showcased a wide range of Balinese painting styles: the earth-tone, stylized wayang (puppet) figures of Kamasan; the energetic styles of the young artists of Penestanan; the ornate, chiaroscuro tradition style of Batuan; to the verdantly, lush and fleshy style of Pengosekan.

The Auction

A fun-filled day for all is promised on Saturday, August 9th when the painted Swiss cows will be assembled at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park with games, music, and a BBQ planned, culminating in the auction of the Swiss Cows.

The Swiss Cows in Bali Round Up and Auction is sponsored and coordinated by the Rotary Club of Nusa Dua.
