(6/23/2003)

Since being named Chief of Bali's Police Force in late April, Inspector General Drs. Made Pastika has taken a number of high-profile steps in keeping with his reputation as a no-nonsense cop with a genuine sense of social concern for his community.

• Appointed Chief of Police of Bali shortly after being named Asian Newsmaker of the Year by TIME Magazine for his universally-praised leadership of the international investigative team that cracked the October 12th bombing of a Bali nightspot, Pastika was immediately thrust into handling complex security arrangements surrounding the trials of the more than 30 suspects accused of playing roles in the bombing.

Pastika has shunned many of the traditional VIP's courtesies extended to his predecessors, abandoning personal police escorts and VIP facilities for his entourage when traveling around the island.

Pastika has made bold steps to close organized gambling dens and reduce traditional forms of gambling in local communities in Bali.

• The Chief has also vowed to take all steps possible to curb "money politics' in the coming selection process for Bali's governor, threatening to jail those found guilty of courting support and votes with cash payments.

• And, most recently, he formally established a local foundation - Widia Canti Dharma (WCD) whose aim will be to teach and instill Hindu Dharma teachings on orphans and street children while providing vocational training in painting, sculpting, electronic repair and agriculture.

The very affable General Pastika has also initiated a column in a local Balinese newspaper to which the public can provide comments and suggestions on how to ensure that every member of Bali's police service shares his commitment to "serve and protect" the Public.
