State Prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for Amrozi bin Nurhasyim, also known as Amrozi, for his role in the terrorist bombing of a Bali nightspot on October 12, 2002, that claimed the lives of over 200 people.
The demand for execution by firing squad was contained in the prosecution's 225 page summary of the case read in a marathon court session held in Denpasar on Monday, June 30, 2003. The final presentation by the prosecutors signals the closing stages in a trial that saw 55 witnesses called to support Amrozi's role in purchasing the van and the explosives used to level the Kuta nightspots.
Amrozi's defense team will respond to the prosecution and give their summary of the case in a court session scheduled for July 15th. On a separate date, some time after that, the panel of judges will render their verdict and sentence in the case.
The trial represents the first in over 30 trials scheduled to be held in Bali of those arrested and charged in connection with the Bali bombings.
