The MV Mabua Express - the 248-passenger express ferry service that once operated two trips each day between Bali and Lombok, has formally called it a day. A member of the Company's management has confirmed that the ship has operated its last voyage and the ship is on the books of ship brokers looking for a new owner.
The Mabua Express ceased operations on January 7, 2003, to undertake a routine docking and overhaul at Surabaya dockyards. The prolonged effects of the downturn in visitors following the October 2002 bombing of nightspots in Kuta followed by the SARS panic resulted in several postponements in planned service resumption leading up to the latest decision to close the operation completely.
Service between Lombok and Bali is still available from the Bounty Cruises Ship; almost hourly car/passenger service between Padang Bai (Bali) to Lombok; and a number of scheduled flights operating between the two islands.
