Local police have begun arresting local turtle satay sellers as part of a larger campaign to enforce national regulations prohibiting the trade in the endangered green turtles.
According to local press reports, a sweep by officers of local markets on July 21, 2003, intended to capture turtle satay vendors ended up netting fraudsters selling succulent kebabs and lawar salad made from local beef parading as turtle meat.
In total 6 suspects who offered undercover police officers food they claimed was made from fresh turtle meat quickly changed their story at the police station. Under interrogation, the "turtle satay vendors" admitted they mislead potential customers into believing their beef-made dishes contained turtle meat in order to justifying the higher price they get from customers seeking the forbidden delicacy.
Now the police face a new dilemma: do they charge the vendors with fraud now that the turtle pedaling charges aren't likely to stick?
