The Indonesian Telematic Software Association (ASPILUKI) have declared their intent to develop Bali as a Regional IT Center of excellence (RICE) following their success with a similar pilot project in Bandung, West Java.
ASPILUKI is an association of computer software professionals, software developers, and computer technology educators dedicated to advance information technology (IT) issues in Indonesia.
The group recently provided programming training to software developers in Bandung and plans to launch similar programs in Bali by the last quarter of 2003. In aiming to give Bali a reputation as a regional center of IT excellence the association hopes to not only open new employment opportunities in this sector but to also accelerate the development of e-commerce and e-government in Indonesia.
In support of its educational programs ASPILUKI has received generous support from the Indonesian Department of Industry and Trade in the form of the loan of computers and IT network access.
It has been estimated that the potential export income from the outsourcing of software development has the potential of generating over US$ 100 million in foreign exchange for Indonesia.
