A rare and very special performance of the Tektekan Calonarang will be held on the dawning of the full moon on Wednesday, September 10, 2003 at the Garuda Wisnu Kencana Cultural Park Amphitheatre (GWK).

Distinguished Performers

Performed by the people of Baturiti Kerambitan, the "tektekan" is a traditional bamboo instrument frequently associated with acts of exorcism. Believed to be imbued with magical powers, the "tektekan" is called upon to deliver the people from a time of plague or natural disaster.

This unique performance of Bali's epic "Calonarang" dance drama, forms part of the sacred trance dance repertoire of Bali and will be accompanied by a "tektekan" orchestra in unique musical collaboration with the traditional gamelan orchestra. This rare rendering of the "Tektekan Calonarang" was first created in 1967 by Bapak Anak Agung Ngurah Oka Silagunadha, the titular head of the 9th generation of Balinese Royal Household of Puri Anyar Kerambitan. The September 10th performance, will be directed by its creator and performed by the people who live surrounding the palace Puri Anyar.

The approximate 1.5 hours performance will retell the epic story of a 11th century struggle between the kingdoms of Queen Mahendradatta and Erlangga. Rich in intrigue and subplots, the "Tektekan Calonarang" is an analogue to the eternal struggle between good and evil.

Dancing and making a special appearance in the September 10th performance will be Professor Dr. Wayan Dibia, a professor of dance and Head of the Indonesian Arts Institute, Denpasar.

Ticket Prices

All performers and musicians have generously donated their time and talents for the evening from which the proceeds will be donated for the restoration of the Pura Taman Amertha a mid-19th century temple in the village of Batutriti Kerambitan.

The individual ticket price for VIP's is Rp. 100,000 (approximately US$ 11.60) for adults and Rp. 50,000 for students. Regular tickets are available for Rp. 50,000 (approximately US$ 5.80) for adults and Rp. 25,000 for students.

The performance will begin at 1930 hours.
