On Friday, September 5, 2003, one of Bali's leading dance choreographers and a community leader of the Bedulu village, Wayan Limbak, died at the age of 106.
In the 1930's Limbak, together with German artist Walter Spies, created the Kecak based on the sacred Sanghyang dance tradition. Later, traveling the world as a member of Balinese performance troupes Limbak helped to popularize what has become one of Bali's most famous dances to the world.
A village leader for decades in the village of Bedulu, he was preceded in death by 3 wives and 4 children, 22 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
The nyiramin and narpana ceremonies - the traditional preparations of Wayan Limbak's remains took place on Sunday, September 7, with his cremation set for the following day.
