Iman Samudra, depicted by State Prosecutors as the "mastermind" behind the deadly October 12, 2002, bombing attack on a Bali nightspot was formally sentenced to death before a firing squad by a five judge panel in Bali, on Wednesday, September 10, 2003.
In handing down the ultimate sentence to Iman Samudra Chief Judge Wayan Sugawa cited the loss of 202 lives, physical injuries to more than 325 people, physical damage of 423 separate properties, the long-term damage to Bali's tourism-based economy and the total lack of remorse on the part of the defendant as forming the basis for rendering the death sentence. Samudra was also implicated by police in a series of church bombings in other parts of Indonesia.
On August 7th, Amrozi, an accomplice in the Bali bombings was sentenced to death in the Bali courts for his role in planning and executing the October bombings.
Immediately after receiving the verdict, Iman Samudra's defense team announced their intention to appeal the verdict.
