(9/30/2003)
Based on figures provided by the Bali Tourism Authority, balidiscovery.com has prepared a detailed breakdown of Bali arrivals covering the period January – July 2001/2002/2003.
A Prolonged Slump
As shown in the recent Bali Update coverage [July Arrivals Down with a Narrowing Gap], arrivals to the island continued to improve on a month-to-month basis but still lagged badly on a month-to-month comparison basis with previous years. Offering some encouragement is the fact that a gap of 59.88% in the May 2003 versus May 2002 Bali arrivals had narrowed to 23.94% by July.
Length of Stay Factor
Not reflected in the data presented, however, is the even more drastic shortfall in room nights at Bali hotels for the period. Any advances in the number of short-haul-brief-stay customers from ASEAN countries does not begin to compensate the dramatic loss in room nights resulting in the loss of Bali's traditional European and Australian markets, who have stays averaging 2-3 times longer than their ASEAN counterparts.
The Outlook for August
While formal figures for August are not yet available, preliminary figures indicate that arrivals for August 2003 lost ground, lagging around 31% behind the same month just a year before.
