Negative travel warnings aside, there are indications that U.S. President George W. Bush may be considering a brief visit to Bali in the course of an Asian tour.
The Saturday, September 27, 2003, edition of the Indonesian-language Bali Post reports that provincial officials in Bali recently met with an advance team from the White House to survey specific venues in Bali to be used in connection with a Presidential visit. A spokesman from the Provincial Government office refused to divulge additional details regarding the proposed visit, awaiting formal confirmation of the visit by the Indonesian Department of Foreign Affairs.
While the specific date is not clear for the visit, President Bush is currently scheduled to meet the Philippine President on October 18 suggesting a Bali visit might form the next stop on his Asian tour.
The last visit by a U.S. President to Bali occurred in 1984 with the visit of President Ronald Reagan to the island.
