Assisted by the Sydney office of Garuda Indonesia, a fact-finding mission appointed by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture and Tourism visited Australia in September to consult with the travel industry and discover means by which to grow Australian tourism to Indonesia.
The mission, led by the Ministry's Assistant Deputy for Market Development, Mr. Wardiyatmo, was tasked to help formulate the Indonesian National Tourism Blueprint Marketing Plan, which takes a 3-5 year perspective. Visiting Melbourne and Sydney to seek ties that will strengthen Indonesia's relationship with the Australian travel industry the team had "very free, very frank and very helpful discussions with senior management of travel agents, wholesalers, and airlines as well as media specialists and academics." Setting the tone for the meetings that followed, the Consul General for the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Reksodiputro, encouraged a "vigorous give-and-take dialogue so as to generate the most useful kind of suggestions and input."
While in Australia the team participated in a seminar of tourism experts hosted by Prof. Lindsay Turner of the School of Applied Economics, Victoria University, Melbourne. Prof. Turner is a world-renowned expert on tourism forecasting for Asia Pacific, co-edits the annual PATA (Pacific Asia Travel Association) forecasting report, and has consulted with the National Blueprint Marketing Team.
