On Thursday, October 2, 2003, the Denpasar District Court sentenced Ali Gufron, also known as Muklas, to death for his role as a co-conspirator in the October 12, 2002 bombing of a Bali night spot. He now joins Iman Samudra and Amrozi on death row awaiting death by a firing squad once a lenthy appeal process is exhausted.
Presiding Justice Cokorda Raka Suamba found Muklas guilty of conspiring to commit an act of terrorism and for being in possession of illegal explosives. In delivering a capital verdict, the judge cited the defendant's unrepentant attitude regarding his acts that caused the loss of many human lives, his perversion of religious teachings as a justification for murder, and the substantial guilt.
Muklas immediately declared his intention to appeal the verdict of the Court's decision.
With this latest verdict, 17 of 30 people charged in connection with the terrorist attack have now been convicted by the Indonesian courts.
