On Sunday, October 5, 2003, President Megawati Soekarnoputri officiated at the opening of the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit held at Bali Hilton International.
Heralding a new era of cooperation between ASEAN member states and between the public and private sectors, the President pointed to the Business and Investment Summit being held in conjunction with the main Summit as the practical consequence of decisions taken at the 7th Annual ASEAN Summit held in Brunei two years ago. At that meeting the private sector was given a larger role in ASEAN'S future through the establishment of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (BAC) - assigned the task of holding an annual summit to encourage business investment in the region.
President Salutes the Island of Bali
The President reminded the delegates at the investment summit that Bali was intentionally chosen for their meeting in order to "prove that we are able to maintain the rhythm of our life," adding "We would like to demonstrate that however profound the sorrow that befell us ... due to the inhumane terror act; it should not deter us from moving forward."
Mapping the course of the Nation's and Bali's future, President Megawati concluded: "We have faced that terrible criminal act and will continue to endeavor resolving it without relenting our steps in attaining the aspiration for a prosperous and advanced life."
