Malaysian Digest reports that the former Regent of Gianyar, the chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI-Gianyar) and an Ubud hotelier Dr. Tjok Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati, has been named Malaysia’s Honorary Consul in Bali.
Also known affectionately as “Cok Ace,” Sukawati was handed his official appointment from the Malaysia King (Yang di-Pertuan Agong) in a ceremony held at the Puri Ubud Royal Palace.
A descendent of the Ubud Royal Household, Tjok Ace holds a Doctorate in Cultural Studies from Udayana University where he also serves as a part-time professor.
In appointing Cok Ace as the highest representative of Malaysia in Bali, the Malaysian Government said the appointment of a Consul in Bali was made necessary due to a large number of Malaysian visitors to Bali each year. In addition, some 200 Malaysian students are pursuing medical degrees at Bali’s Udayana University and a large number of Malaysian expats also work on the Island.
In receiving his appointment, Sukawati said the appointment was both an honor and an opportunity to forge closer relations between the people of Bali and Malaysia.
The location for the Malaysian Consulate in Bali will be at Puri Jumara Sakti on Jalan Bentuyung, Ubud, Bali
