Sick and Tired of Akasaka

Denpasar Mayor Reviews Ways to Permanently Close Disgraced Akasaka Night Club Down

The Mayor of Bali’s capital of Denpasar, IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra, is being urged by various parties to revoke the operating permit of the Akasaka Night Club following the recent police raid on the nightspot that netted 19,000 ecstasy tablets and resulted in the arrest of the manager and 3 employees.

NusaBali reports that Mayor Mantra has promised the public that he will explore the legal means for nullifying the licenses of the Club located at the Simpang Enam intersection.

The Mayor told the press that he is reviewing the licenses of the Akasaka Night Club with an eye to permanently closing the business.

Separately, Bali’s Governor Made Mangku Pastika publicly thanked the Indonesian police for their efforts to fight narcotics as demonstrated with the arrests made at the Akasaka Night Club.

The Governor said: “I have taken notice (of the arrest); 19,000 ecstasy capsules is a large amount. If 19,000 capsules are spread over seven weeks, how many people will die every day if these pills are distributed? Congratulations and success to the National Police and the Provincial Police for their efforts to save the next generation.”

Governor Pastika called on the police to continue the war on narcotics and rid Bali of methamphetamines, marijuana, and heroin.

The Governor lamented the fact that Bali has become a center for illegal drug transactions, a by-product, in Pastika’s opinion, of the Island’s tourism industry and a large number of people who flock to the Island in search of jobs and incomes.

Meanwhile, local lawmakers have criticized the “special treatment” seemingly afforded the Akasaka. Not only was the nightspot long known as an illicit drug center, but officials in the past have managed to turn a blind eye to violations of local zoning laws in allowing the building to operated even though it exceeds height restrictions and lacks required Balinese style elements mandated to be licensed for business.
