Local press reports confirm that 155 of 174 employees of the Kamandalu Resort and Spa located in Petulu Kelod, just north of Ubud, staged a one day walk-out on Friday, December 12, 2003.
The 45-unit all-villa resort suffered the walk out strike reportedly over employees allegations that contractual and legal entitlements were not being met by the Resort's owners and the manner in which pay incentives and bonuses were allocated among employees. The strike, which commenced at 8 a.m., resulted in a meeting between employee representatives and members of the Board of Directors for the Hotel that lasted from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. mediated by representatives for the Gianyar Regional Government Office.
According to the Indonesian-language Bali Post, the discussions resulted in decisions that will see many of the employees' demands fulfilled by the Owners who blamed the industrial action on a failure of communication between management and the rank and file. Agreement was also achieved on the payment of wages and benefits in strict conformance with current government regulations and the rights of staff to participate in unionizing activities.
Resort operations and guest services disturbed by the strike, returned to normal by Saturday, December 13, 2003.
