A financial grant of US$ 2.5 million from the Overseas Fisheries Cooperation Foundation of Japan will be used to build one of the largest centers for tuna research in Gondol, Bali.
Scheduled for completion in 2005, the Bali research center will focus on exploring ways to harvest the ocean's tuna in a sustainable manner.
Much prized as an import to Japan, tuna are being over-fished from the waters surrounding Bali with many local fishermen resorting to destructive underwater blasting in order to catch prized red-tail and yellow-tail tuna.
