Indonesia’s leading online travel service – Traveloka – is providing humanitarian assistance to seven villages surrounding the Mount Agung volcano that were evacuated following the introduction of a “high alert” status.

The State News Agency Antara quotes the country market manager for Traveloka, John Safenson, who visited Karangasem in Bali on Friday, November 3, 2017. Safeson, when speaking about the company’s donations, said, “This is part of our responsibility to those people inconvenienced by volcanic activity of Mount Agung.”

Safenson said the company collected assistance worth Rp. 226 million via donations made by Traveloka employees and a decision to allocate Rp. 500 from every online sale of a ticket or hotel transacted during the period October 24-28, 2017.

The items donated comprised food for public kitchens operating in temporary camps for evacuees. The first phase of donations were delivered to people from Desa Menanga, Desa Belatung, Desa Besakih, Desa Tegenan, and Desa Batusesa.

The second phase of assistance aid will take place on November 11, 2017, in Desa Abang and Desa Seraya in the Regency of Karangasem.

Traveloka’s assistance is being distributed in cooperation with The Rapid Response Team (ACT), a volunteer organization dedicated to humanitarian assistance.

The Vice-president of ACT, Rini Waryani, said that in addition to basic physical necessities the evacuees also need psychological assistance to reduce the emotional trauma that resulted from the higher alert level for Mount Agung.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) reduced the alert level for Mount Agung on October 29, 2017, after staying at the highest alert status since September 22, 2017.
