A 5.0 earthquake on the Richter scale struck in the ocean 11 kilometers off the northeast coast of Bali at 5:54 am local time on Thursday morning, November 9, 2017.

The epicenter was estimated at 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface.

The earthquake was felt over a wide area of Bali with repost on social media documenting the “shake” was experienced  from north Bali to Denpasar.

There was no threat of a tsunami, damages or injuries linked to the seismic event. Follow up reports in one day after the earthquake say some building in Karangasem suffered limited structural damag, including the Regency’s House of Representative (DPRD-Karangasem) where some walls sustained cracks and a few ceiling tiles fell down. The damage at the legislature building was estimated at Rp. 20 million.

An official of the Volcanic Disaster Mitigation Agency, Devy Syabana, quoted by, linked the earthquake with still-active Mount Agung volcano. The epicenter of the quake, according to Devy, was only 12-13 kilometers from Mount Agung’s peak.

Devy said the earthquake proved that Mount Agung remains active, adding: “There’s still a lot of big energy.”

Pratama, a man who lives in Bali’s capital of Denpasar more than 60 kilometers south of the epicenter, said he felt the earthquake for a prolonged period. He said he was awoken while sleeping on the first floor of his home in by the earthquake

Other reports were received from across Denpasar and Ubud.
