PT Jasamarga Bali Toll (JBT) reports that traffic on Bali’s only toll road has decreased by some 25%, due in large part to the recent eruption of the Mount Agung volcano.
Bisnis Jakarta quotes the CEO of JBT, Akhmad Tito Karin, who said the downturn in toll traffic dates from October 2017 when traffic decreased 20% and November when the decline was put at 25%.
Tito said volcanic activity on Mount Agung is bringing negative impacts on areas beyond the Island’s tourism sector, affecting also transportation services such as the toll road.
The JBT business plan originally targeted 53,000 vehicles using the toll way each day in 2017. However, this projection was reduced to 42,500 for the year and dropped to only 38,000 vehicles per day in November 2017, reflecting the drop in visitors to Bali.
In September 2017, some 550,000 foreign tourists visited Bali, dropping 15% to 440,00 in October.
JBT’s fortunes may receive a modest boost due to traffic being detoured onto the toll road during the current construction of a new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s airport.
