Indonesia’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Ignasius Jonan, did much to clarify recent loosely formulated statements by Government Minister suggesting the entire Island of Bali was under an Alert Level II – “Waspada” status.

As reported by, Minister Jonan took special pains to emphasize and underline on Thursday, December 21, 2107 that the highest alert warning of “Level IV – Awas” only applied to a radius of between 8-10 kilometers surrounding Mount Agung’s volcanic crater. Outside that exclusion zone, said Jonan, he personally guarantees that Bali remains safe for visitors, adding: “The (alert) status is only for 8-10 kilometers from the peak of Mount Agung. Outside that, Bali is safe and no generalized alert status is in effect for the Island as a while.”
At the same time, the Minister ask all parties to remain vigilant and stay abreast of any new developments in relation to Mount Agung.
Jonan said he hoped all parties would work to change the incorrect exaggerations on the threat posed by Mount Agung. Illustrating his point, the Minister pointed to the the West Coast of the Island of Lombok that is, in fact, much closer to Mount Agung than the main tourist areas of South Bali where life goes on as normal without any degree of alarm.
Clearly, explained the Minister, there is no basis for safety and security concerns in the main tourist areas of Bali in relation to any continuing eruption of Mount Agung.
