The Deputy Governor of Bali, Ketut Sudikerta, accompanied by a number of Provincial officials, led of an internal operational management meeting on Bali's sacred Besakih Temple in his office in Denpasar on Wednesday, December 27, 2017.
As reported by, Sudikerta said that in his capacity as the head of the management board for the Besakih Temple he made the decision to close the Temple to tourism, prayers and ceremonies for reasons of safety and security when, on November 25, 2017, Mount Agung and its surrounding environs were declared a Disaster Zone and the volcano placed at the highest alert level of “IV-Awas.”
However, based on recent development in the status of Mount Agung and prompted by President Joko Widodo’s December 22, 2017, the decision to revoke the emergency disaster status in connection with the continuing eruption of the volcano, the Deputy Governor has has prompted the Deputy-Governorissued to issue instructions for the Besakih Temple to once againresume operations.
“Although I have declared Mount Agung open again for operations, I am also asking the those working at the Temple and surrounding areas exercise caution and follow all instructions from the relevant authorities,” said Sudikerta.
The assistant manager of Besakih Temple, I Wayan Ngawit, confirmed that he would carry out the instructions of the Deputy Governor in coordination with the head of the Public Welfare Department (Kesra) of the Province in preparing the formal instructions reopening a temple widely considered to be the pre-eminent “Mother Temple” among the Island’s religious sites.
Some observers are asking pointed questions regarding the Deputy Governor’s decision to reopen the Besakih Temple that is only 7-kilometers from the crater of Mount Agung and is therefore clearly located within the “exclusion zone” set by the National Disaster Geologic Disaster Agency (PVMBG) and, as such, is an area officially off limits to any kind of human habitation
