The Balinese language is central to the Island’s ancient culture. Understanding the intricacies of how Balinese is spoken and used, how native Balinese interact with each other, an individual’s place in the hierarchy of a four-caste system, and, arguably, how both the language and esteemed culture are struggling to survive into the future - are all needed to understand to coprehend the situation of the Balinese language in modern Bali.

Even the most casual observer must realize that the Balinese language is under threat and sits squarely on the endangered list of global languages.

In response to this threat, a group of linguists and members of the Balinese Community joined forces to formed the Transparent Language 7000 Language Project (Proyek Bahasa 7000 Bahasa Transparan) that has succeeded in translating the a Google front page into Basa Bali and creating the BASAbali.wiki language resource. The BASABali.wiki site provides access to a dictionary of Balinese, cultural encyclopedium, and a self-editing digital library accessible in English, Indonesian and Balainese.

As part of their continuing efforts to support the Balinese language, a “Gendu Wirasa” gathering was held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Taman Baca Kesiman in Denpasar. The event saw the participation of academics, Balinese cultural enthusiasts and those involved in BASAbali projects island wide.

The BASAbali Wiki on line digital library allows users to continually enrich content by submitting new vocabulary, terminology, sentence constructions and even audio-visual content. I Gede Nala Antara, a director of BASAbali Wiki commented: “I urge the people of Bali to access BASAbali Wiki and contribute Balinese language corrections, vocabulary, sentences, terms, videos, speeches. Don’t worry as there is a team of language experts that moderates all submissions before they are uploaded.”

BASAbali Wiki is becoming an increasingly important archive of Balinese writing, information on influential figures in the Island’s community, and other matters related to Balinese language and culture. The site has nearly 350,000 users worldwide who visit the site to access a Balinese dictionary, video submissions, photos, short stories, quotations, traditional works of literature and Wikipedia-like articles on Bali-related subjects.

Underlining the growing importance of BASAbali Wiki, in February 2015 the efforts was named Semantic Media of the Month – an acknowledgement that was reported in Tempo magazine, The Jakarta Post, and Voice of America.

Antara said he hoped BASAbali Wiki would become the main source of Balinese cultural information as well as a Balinese language learning media for coming generations. BASAbali Wiki also aims to become a platform for Bali-oriented writers, photographers, lontar book archivists, historians and folk musicians - to name but a few of those who will find the site useful.

Explaining how BASAbali Wiki works, Antara said a person could search the word “ginger” on the site and could receive an instant translation, nuanced meanings of those terms, affiliated terms, where those terms are found in lontar literature, and even where the words are found in the lyrics of songs.

Antara added: “We are sure that students, teachers, musicians, artists, and others use dictionary and online social media that can be incorporated into BASAbali Wiki."
