Born in Holland, Ian van Wieringen was only 10 years old when his family moved to Indonesia in 1953. 4 years later mounting political uncertainty caused the household to uproot once again and move on, this time to Australia.
Enrolling at the University of Sydney Ian's prodigious talent as a painter was evident, mounting his first exhibition at the tender age of only 19 with another promising young artist, John Firth-Smith. The critics were impressed, declaring the young Dutch transplant one of Australia' most promising young artists.
More exhibitions and important commissions followed, including the 6 granite reliefs that grace the façade of Australia's Treasury building in Canberra.
Lured back to life in the tropics, Van Wieringen returned to Indonesia, living in Bali from 1969 until 1994 with occasional extended interludes for refueling in Europe, Australia and the U.S.A.
Van Wieringen's work can be divided into two broad categories. He is certainly most famous for large expressionistic canvases, which display the brilliant colors and vigorous brushwork of a master painter. His second great talent is as a draftsman. While the dynamism of his acrylics reflect his roots in Abstract Expressionism and the CoBra Movement, his astounding ability for life drawings demonstrates an enduring respect for the Renaissance masters.
Clearly one of the most important expatriate artists to have lived and worked on the island of Bali in the modern era, Van Wieringen's brilliance is his ability to capture the essence of this remarkable island without compromising his own cultural heritage or artistic integrity. He remains unique and independent, displaying a clearness of vision that has not wavered since his youth.
