The Living Legends of Bali

Not to Be Missed - A Festival of Bali's Great Dancers in a Single Performance on December 26, 2004.

Ten years ago, two of Bali's leading lights in traditional music and dance circles as well as the Artistic Directors of the "Top Group Gamelan and Dancers in Bali," Agung Anom and Gusti Ayu, took the bold initiative of inviting many of Bali's elder aristocrats of dance and gamelan to participate in a three day workshop with the young dancers and musicians of the Puri Agung, Piliatan Ubud. That workshop, culminating in an epic performance, reasserted the age-old mentorship between guru and student and rekindled an interest in the power and purity of classical Balinese dance and the work of early dance innovators, such as the legendary Mario of Tabanan.

A Very Special Evening Ė Not to be Missed

Ni Ketut CenikTo celebrate the 10th anniversary of that historic gathering of Balinese artists, a special gala performance of dances by the "Living Legends of Bali" will be held on Bulan Purnama (the full moon), Sunday, December 26, 2004 at Pura Dalem, Ubud starting at 7:30 p.m..

Performing with the distinguished Semara Ratih Gamelan group, some of Bali's most treasured dancers will defy the relentless march of time and once again return to the performance stage. Among those scheduled to appear are Ni Gusti Ayu Raka, Ibu Ni Made Anis, Jero Gadung Arwati, I Made Jimat, Ibu Jero Puspawati, Ni Luh Menek, I Wayan Kumpul, I Nyoman Sueta and the much loved and indefatigable 83 year-old Ni Ketut Cenik.

Special Guest Artist - Ramli Ibrahim

Ramli IbrahimAs an added bonus to an already memorable evening, Ramli Ibrahim, the Malaysian dancer and choreographer and widely considered the leading exponent of the "Orissa" classical Indian dance form will appear in a new collaboration with Semara Ratih.

Ramli will be appearing in Bali directly from his much lauded tour in Konorak, India.

Is you attend only one dance performance this year - this is the one!

Cost of admission is Rp. 100,000 (approximately US$11.00) with proceeds from the evening going to the Semara Ratih Foundation.
