On Thursday, July 26, the old Kartika Plaza Hotel reopened for business under its new name Discovery Kartika Plaza. Closed by a wild-cat strike on December 18, 2000, the hotel's management terminated some 410 employees who refused to work and spent the six month's hiatus remodeling all the hotels rooms and public areas and training their new hires. A recent decision by the Labor Courts ratified the terminations but awarded the 410 former employees some Rp. 2.1 billion (US$ 210,000) in severance payments.
Opening in the middle of Bali's high season, the hotel's management report that occupancies have already surpassed the 70 percent level.
At a celebration to mark the hotel's return to operations, the President Director of the hotel's owning company, PT Kharisma Arya Paksi, Mr. Tommy Winata, awarded tourism scholarships and assistance packages to local foundations worth Rp. 450 million (US$ 45,000).
