(6/19/2005)

Figures just released for direct foreign tourist arrivals to Bali for the month of May 2005 show that 116,595 overseas visitors passed through Bali's Ngurah Rai airport during the month, a figure down just one-half of a percent from the total recorded in May 2004 (117,191). Cumulative totals through the first five months of 2005, however, stood at 552,581 – a full 7% above the same period just one year before.

A Summary Glance at Arrivals January – May 2005

A closer look at arrival statistics for Bali through the end of May 2005 reveal:

• Total arrivals January through May (552,585) set a new benchmark, surpassing the previous record set for the same period in 2001 (552,089).

• Due primarily to downturns in the South Korean and Taiwanese markets, Asia-Pacific arrivals dropped 10% for the month of May 2005, totaling 67,677, as compared to 75,168 for May 2004. Cumulative Asia-Pacific arrivals for the first five months of 2005 managed to hold largely steady (325,826), a mere 0.75% ahead of the same period in 2004.

• Of some concern, Taiwanese visitors are down 36.6% year to date at the end of May (45,379 versus 71,597), a trend that deepened in May with 42.3% fewer Taiwanese coming to Bali as compared to the same month a year before. Local observers point to lingering tsunami fears and liberalization in travel rules for Taiwanese tourist wishing to visit the PRC as the underlying cause of this significant downturn.

• While South Korean visitors are up 24.3% year to date for January-May 2005, a sudden drop of 18.27% in May arrivals (7,589) warrants closer examination by tourism officials.

• Threatened travel boycotts by the Australian market in the wake of the 20-year sentence for convicted drug smuggler Shapelle Corby apparently had no appreciable impact on May's travel numbers. May 2005 Australian arrivals were up 8.5% from Australia’s record arrivals recorded in May 2004. 22,652 Australians visited Bali in May 2005 bring the year-to-date total to 101,535. - an overall increase of 8.1% as compared to the same period one year before.

• Japan continued to be Bali's strongest inbound market with 23,089 Japanese coming in May 2005, a figure 6.8% better than 2004 totals for May ex-Japan. Total Japanese visitors January to May are up 18.52% (121,465)from one year ago.

• ASEAN arrivals to Bali continue to boom. ASEAN visitors for May 2005 (14,036) were 40% more than the same month in 2004. Totals for the first five months of 2005 from ASEAN were up 16% from one year before.

• The Americas – comprised of all visitors from North and South America – continue to regain lost ground. May figures (6,564) improved 6.3% from a year before with an even more dramatic 120% improvement for the cumulative totals for the first five months of the year. Still, figures from the America's for the first 5 months of 2005 lag more than 26% behind arrival figures recorded in 2001.

• Similarly, European arrivals, although still 20% behind totals achieved in 2001, were up 8.8% for May 2005 (27,396), forming part of an overall 18.24% improvement year to date for the first five months of 2005 (136,422) over totals for 2004 (115,374).

• German arrivals for May 2005 equaled 6.807, up 4% from the same month one year ago. Although still lagging 13.2% behind totals for 2001, total German visitors for the first five months of the year are up 13.34% from jst one year ago.

• U.K. visitors are also making great strides on a year-to-year basis, up 37% for the month May 2005 with 5,997 U.K. tourists reported passing through Bali's airport. Year to date, U.K. visitors are up 36.5% through the end of May 2005, but still a substantial 35.13% behind performance totals for the first five months of 2001.

• Dutch visitors, managing to largely ignore the lack of a visa-on-arrival facility, have almost regained their footing in Bali arrivals. Total arrivals January-May 2005 (15,020) from the Netherlands are only 8% less than the totals achieved in the same period in 2001 and represent an 18.3 percent improvement over the same period in 2004.

• French visitors improved 16.4% in the first five months of 2005 (16,167), as compared to the same period in 2004. When compared to "better times" (i.e.m the same five-month period in 2001), the French market still lags behind 9%.
