Government tourism officials remain optimistic that the targeted 5.4 million foreign tourists will be achieved for the year ending 2001.
Pointing to an expected average annual growth rate of 7%, Mr. Thamrin B. Bachri, the Director General for Marketing and International Relations for the Department of Culture and Tourism, said he was optimistic that Indonesia had recovered from the downturn suffered in arrivals in 1997.
Supporting the Director General's positive outlook are figures for the first half of 2001 showing arrivals still to be on track with the 5.4 million visitor target.
Mr. Thamrin Bachri further underlined the improving tourism picture in Indonesia, stating that the more conducive political atmosphere now prevailing in the Country with the election of Mrs. Megawati Soekarnoputri and her appointed cabinet will lend even more impetus for improved tourist arrivals.
