The Captain of my Jukung, The Master of My Soul!

For Only $25 - You, Too, Can Become the Captain of a Traditional Sailing Jukung on Sunday, October 14.

Bali News: The Captain of my Jukung, The Master of My Soul!

(8/23/2001)

The jukung is the ubiquitous local single-sailed outrigger boat used by traditional Balinese fishermen. Their colorful triangular sails and bowsprits painted to resemble smiling fish are familiar to anyone who spends any time on one of Bali's beaches.

Sadly, the fishermen of the Tulamben and Amed areas in northeast Bali have had a difficult time in recent years with diminishing fish hauls causing them financial hardship. As a result, The Fishing Bureau of the Karangasem Regency in cooperation with the Emerald Tulamben Beach Hotel inaugurated the first Jukung Race held last October.

For just US$25 visitors to the island are given their own jukung and Captain for the race between Tulamben and Amed. Sponsors are also allowed to form one half of the two man crew for the race. High rollers, eager to raise their visibility in the community can sponsor an actual sailcloth for only US$100. Sail sponsors are allowed to pick the color of their sale and can have a message, name or corporate identity emblazoned on the sail. All this, and the organizers also produce photograph of your boat and sail for your photo album.

The program brings much needed publicity to the less-visited areas of Tulamben, provides for a fun day out for visitors and locals alike, and supplies valuable economic support to the area's traditional fishermen.

This year's race is set for Sunday, October 14th at the Emerald Tulamben Beach Hotel. Additional information is available from Mr. I.B. Arka at telephone ++62-(0)361-462673 or facsimile ++62-(0)361-462407.
