With nation-wide tourism totals down 5.22% at 3.23 million at the end of Q3, combined with the added complication of the October 1, 2005 bombing attacks in Bali – official government tourist targets of 6 million foreign tourists to Indonesia for the year have become virtually impossible to achieve.
Admitting current target were unattainable, Minister of Tourism and Culture Jero Wacik told the Jakarta Post that the Government was now aiming for only 5 million visitors for all of 2005 and had revised its target of 7 million visitors in 2006 down to 6 million.
Assuming Indonesia manages to hit the lower target of 5 million visitors, that total would represent 5.6% decrease from the 5.3 million visitors achieved in 2004.
Using statistical indices favored by the Government, Indonesia's failure to hit its established target of foreign visitors in 2005 translates into a loss of US$1 billion in foreign exchange earnings.
