After an absence of three years, the WTA - Women's Tennis Association Tour will return to Indonesia, September 22-30.
Play will take place in two locations, Bali and Surabaya hosting "Class 3" and "Class 5" play, respectively. Total prize money for the Bali tournament will be US$ 170,000 and US$110,00 for the tournament in Surabaya.
WTA play has been absent from Indonesia over the past three years (1998-2000) due to political unrest. This year's tournament in Indonesia is sponsored by cosmetic manufacturer Sanex and will be known as the Wismilak International 2001 Sanex WTA Tour.
Local tennis fans in Indonesia will have the chance to watch world caliber female tennis players compete in these events, including two ranked Indonesian players - Yayuk Basuki and Wynne Prakusya. Other Indonesian players who may qualify for play include Romana Tejakusuma, Angelique Wijaya and Dea Sumantri.
Reportedly, plans are underway to team Indonesia's Yayuk Basuki with former number one (1995) player Arantha Sanchez in the double's event. Sanchez is currently ranked among the top 20 women tennis players internationally.
