Born in Philadelphia, Ellen Hess commenced her artistic studies in 1972 at Horizon, a creative art school in California, and later at Mesa College.
A senior year trip abroad to Sri Lanka to study traditional dance and language whetted a life-long interest in travel and world culture. During her first trip abroad, Hess discovered photography as he preferred media of artistic expression, a skill developed further in subsequent travels to Australia where she pursued courses in Indonesian culture and language at Murdoch University.
Along life's way, Hess became an ardent surfer, a natural outlet for her love of the ocean and its many moods. The reflection of water's movement and texture and the sky and its light she then captured on film.
Using photography to experiment with all kinds of water settings; searching for what Hess describes as "moments of truth." Her use of large format Giclée printing on cotton canvas allows the textures and movement inherent in water to be fully revealed. The end result: an entrée into the enchanted world of water.
Synchronicity in Water
In her first solo exhibition at Jenggala Art Gallery, Ellen Hess' considerable skills as a photographer and as an artist are made manifest. Using photos taken primarily in Indonesia, the works presented reflect Ellen's interest in the intuitive mystery of water. Hess feels that the more you views her work, the more you will discover the many possibilities within your own imagination.
Synchronicity in Water a photographic exhibition by Ellen Hess at the Jenggala Art Gallery runs daily from April 22 through July 7, 2006.
