A Quarter Short

Bali by the Numbers: A Look at January – March Arrivals from Major Market Areas from 2000-2006.

(4/16/2006)

Final arrival statistics for March 2006 are now available showing a slightly higher than originally reported total of 84,109 visitors to Bali for the third month of 2006. This represents a -28.20% decline in foreign visitors from the same month one year before. As presented on balidiscovery.com, a 7 year graphic presentation of Bali tourist arrivals for the first quarter of the year demonstrates the mirror-like adverse impacts of the October 2005 and October 2002 terrorist attacks.

Asia Pacific Excluding ASEAN

The Asia Pacific, excluding ASEAN, but including Bali's four largest source markets of Japan, Australia, Taiwan and South Korea – is down –11.4% March on March. This more moderate downturn for Asia Pacific to some extent camouflages the more than -60% drop in arrivals currently being experienced in Bali's two biggest inbound markets of Japan and Australia.

ASEAN Arrivals

ASEAN arrivals to Bali were down a mere -10.2% in March 2006 from one year before. Malaysia and Singapore lead the recovery in that sector.

The Americas

The Americas – which encompasses all source countries in both North and South America - were down -39.8% in March from the same month in 2005. On a quarter to quarter basis, however, the Americas' arrivals to Bali are slightly better, down only -27.10%.

European Arrivals

A distinct pattern of improving fortunes is evident in arrivals to Bali from across Europe. March 2006 arrivals were down -20.79% from March 2005. However, seen on a quarter to quarter basis European arrivals are down only -14.86% from one year ago.
