Bright Ideas – Paintings by ISI 2006 Graduates

Talented Young Artists Exhibit at Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay's Ganesha Gallery January 14 – February 7, 2008.

(1/4/2008)

Since opening its doors in 2003, the Bali's Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) or Institute of Fine Arts has had a profound impact on the Island's art scene. The ISI provides young Indonesian artists the chance to hone their skills while living amidst Bali’s thriving arts community.

Demonstrating the high caliber of artists produced by ISI-Bali are the works of three 2006 graduates: I Wayan Theo Ambiyana, I Wayan Eka Partama and Ni Luh Listya Wayhuni. The three young and very talented artists will participate in a month-long exhibition at the Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay's Ganesha Gallery from January 14, 2009 through February 7, 2008.

Wayan Eka Partama

Although Partama's series of paintings depict real persons in real situations, he has chosen to fracture these images in the fashion of an elliptical and asymmetric lens. This technique also allows him to engage in a prismatic exploration of color and form. For example, the canvas "First Smile" is dominated by a joyous young woman accompanied by a piano keyboard, causing us to question if she is a musician. The melding of these forms reminds us that all created images ultimately consist of underlying patterns and structures, such as pixels and rosters.

I Wayan Theo Ambiyana

In his own oblique fashion, Ambiyana is also apparently interested in portraits, not of humans but flowers, often suspended in surrealistic landscapes. The human connection is evident in the skin-like sensuality of the petals and the occasional and somewhat startling insertion of a luscious smile or a bright eye among the blossoms. Ambiyana also explores similarities of color and form in seemingly disconnected subjects. This is best seen in 'Sky Flower' featuring a purple water lily mysteriously hovering above a cluster of violet hued volcanoes.

Ni Luh Listya Wayhuni

Even more subtle and enigmatic is the extraordinary art of Wayhuni, a Balinese woman who produces what she calls 'Dream Landscapes.' Although incorporating surrealistic elements, including mushrooms that resemble a flock of flying saucers, her works make no pretence of photographic imagery and are better compared to the work of De Chirico and Margritte.

Wahyuni's human and zoomorphic forms are sculptural, presented as if they were chiseled from stone rather than painted. Wayhuni also has an affinity for 'space scapes' that give the impression of viewing some planet from outer space.

Three Remarkable Young Artists in a Single Exhibition

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of seeing the early work of three talented graduates, all of the same approximate age and born on the same island, is the balance between common themes and individual expression.

The path of the artist has never been easy. It might even be fair to say that the challenges of originality are greater in a post modern world.

ISI and its graduates are a beacon of light in a foggy and often confusing world.
