Bali new Chief of Police, Inspector General Drs. Teuku Ashikin Husein official assumed his new post on Monday, May 19, 2008. Ashikin has told the press that he is committed to continue his predecessor's war on gambling, hooliganism and racketeering.

Following a detailed close-door briefing by General Paulus Purwoko - Bali's former Chief of Police who has been rotated to a lead crime-fighting role in Jakarta, Ashikin spoke to the Bali press saying: "My chief goal is to improve the welfare of the Balinese people. Clearly, security is the cornerstone to fostering the people's welfare and safety."

Commenting further, Ashikin explained that most Balinese depend economically on the tourism industry, meaning the police have an obligation to safeguard the welfare and safety of all Bali residents, both foreign and local residents.

In response to a reporter's question on how the new police chief will handle "tabu rah" - a religious tradition often closely associated with cock fighting and gambling on the island, General Ashikin replied: "I am certain that no traditional religious belief can be used to justify the practice of gambling. If anyone is brave enough to try (gambling), we will prosecute those people in accordance with the law."

Also asked his view on hooliganism and racketeering ("premanisme"), Ashikin offered the terse retort, "whoever breaks the law, must be processed in accordance with the law."
