One of downtown Denpasar's most popular Chinese restaurant – the Rasa Sayang located on Jalan Teuku Umar No. 243 was leveled by an early morning fire on Monday, September 29, 2008. Three connected shop front units (rukos) comprising the restaurant, kitchen and storage areas were completely consumed by fire together with two motorcycles temporarily stored on the premises.
According to a neighbor, fire was seen erupting from the back area of the restaurant at 3:15 a.m.. Efforts by the neighbor to telephone the local fire brigade were unsuccessful, with the neighbor, 32-year-old Mr. Dedi, complaining that no one was answering the fire department's telephone.
Sadly, valuable time was lost as the man drove to the fire station to personally rouse the firefighters who only arrived at the scene to find the fire completely consuming the restaurant.
Some two hours after the fire department's late arrival, the fire was finally brought under control.
The forensic team of the Bali Police continue to investigate the origin of the blaze.
